Had first discussion with my group (Jaspar, Dalibor and Mark). We talked about our views violence in video games as a whole and made some initial plans for our presentation. We all seem to share a similar view on violence in games, I think any differences will become more evident after more research is done into the subject.
We've decided to use Windows Movie Maker for our presentation as we are able to do most of the things possible in powerpoint and more by using it. Plan of action currently is to seperate and start our own research and decide on exactly what we would like to add to the 20 minute presentation. We've decided to split it up into 4 segments, each contributing our own 5 minute part. After we have all made our film we will put them all together and decide what we need and what we don't and how the presentation wil be constructed exactly. We aim to come together by friday with an outline of exactly what our parts of the presentation will include and with some more research to discuss.
Now we're going to play and discuss some of the games we found online as a group....

A mon avis....
I think when looking at violence in video games you also have to consider the types of violence prevalent in other media such as film, books, and television. The amount of violence deemed acceptable in other media seems to be considerably more violent than in video games. I think that one of the main reasons there is so much controversy surrounding violence in games is that the majority of people who do not play games don't fully understand or accept games as a valid form of entertainment or art. There is also the common misconceived idea that games are directed only at children; the games industry is still relatively young, but the first children to play video games have now grown up and are in their 3o's and up. Most gamers these days are in that sort of age bracket.
I agree that violent games shouldn't be supplied to younger children, although I think its a question of maturity rather than age

Violent video games- again
It seems the Gods are smiling down on me in regards to college work this year. The underlying theme of this unit is violence in video games, the ultimate goal being to create the complete opposite, an "anti-shoot 'em up". Excellent, with all the research I compiled for the last unit into controversial video games fresh in my mind, I'm in a favourable position...
Firstly I'm going to expand on what I already know by looking at some more games that have caused controversy.
I find this game quite funny, probably because of age of the visuals. This game was marketed as an adult game. Even so it has very questionable content, and if this theme was coupled with the realistic 3D graphics of todays games, it would almost definitely not be released.
The game has been accused of being a rape simulator. You control Custer who wears nothing but a cowboy hat and boots. Your goal is to have sexual intercourse with a native indian who is restrained against a pole.

Idea for Anti-shoot 'em up
Instead of the aim of the game being to shoot people.. how about the aim of the game is to prevent everyone being shot.
Fly around and eat all those tasty bullets.

Flash Phoenix
I haven't used Flash much but Marvins film today got me thinking about some of the things I would like to use it for. I think that it would be an ideal tool to make an RPG type game in the vein of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
The graphics are simple but entertaining and effective, I think its plausible to create a similar game in flash and would be a good project to help me get to grips with it.
Also I would like to try making a simple shooting game again like the one Rhona taught us to make last year with a graphical style not that disimilar to that of Killer 7. I think that is a brilliant looking game.

My film
This is what I screened today. I seemed to get some positive comments. I 'm quite pleased with it although I think some improvements could be made on the audio - I don't speak very clearly. Its a shame I couldn't get more relevant/ interesting interview footage. The interview with Steve Hogarty, which I carried out via instant messaging, was very useful for my conclusions in the film.
Screening today
Screening video today. I'm reasonably happy with it, pleased with the results considering its my first ever film. Was a bit tight getting it ready in time. Ideally I would have liked to spend more time on it. The film would have been much better with better constructed interviews, and better camera operation...
